A Journey of Transformation: Howard’s Path to Wayne Densch Apartments

Today, we are delighted to share the story of Howard, one of our long-standing residents whose journey to stability and personal growth highlights the transformative impact of the Wayne Densch Apartments.

Howard’s path to Wayne Densch was far from straightforward. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Howard experienced significant hardships, including periods of homelessness, struggles with substance use, and incarceration. In 1985, he came to Orlando to finish a prison sentence on work release. His life, marked by instability, left him in Florida without a home or support network.

For approximately 15 years, Howard faced the harsh realities of homelessness. He recalls the dangers of living on the streets and the constant uncertainty that comes with it. “Waking up at night with someone digging into my pockets was a regular occurrence,” he shares, reflecting on the challenging period before he found a safe place to call home.

Finding a New Beginning

Through local outreach initiatives, Howard was first connected to the Wayne Densch transitional housing program. Later, when Ability Housing acquired the property, he became eligible for permanent supportive housing (PSH) under Ability Housing’s model.

With the stability of permanent housing, Howard could focus on overcoming his challenges, including successfully battling alcoholism and recovering from a debilitating stroke. At Wayne Densch, Howard found more than just shelter; he discovered a community that supported him every step of the way.

Thriving in a Supportive Community

Since moving to Wayne Densch, Howard has made incredible strides in his personal development. He has embraced the supportive environment, engaging with staff and fellow residents alike. Over the years, he has transformed from a resident who, in his own words, could be “nasty” and quick to anger into a valued member of the community who is known for his kindness and willingness to help others.

“Permanent housing is good for a person,” Howard says, reflecting on his journey. He credits the stability and security of having his own apartment with allowing him to focus on his health and well-being. The independence of living in his own space and the support services offered at Wayne Densch have given Howard the tools he needed to make positive changes in his life.

Richard Wang, program manager at Wayne Densch Apartments, has witnessed Howard’s transformation firsthand.

“When I first met Howard, he was pretty tough to work with, often angry and quick to lash out. But over the years, we’ve seen an incredible change in him. Now, he’s one of the kindest residents here, always willing to lend a hand and help others. It’s amazing to see that it’s never too late for someone to change,” says Wang.

This transformation is a testament to the supportive environment at Wayne Densch, where residents are given the chance to rebuild their lives.

Looking Forward

Today, Howard is a testament to the success of the Wayne Densch Apartments. He continues to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, such as maintaining his own apartment and connecting with people on social media, a skill he developed thanks to the computer classes offered at the community. His story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and opportunities, it’s never too late to make a positive change.

Moving forward, we are excited about our brand-new community center at Wayne Densch that opened in the Spring. This new facility will further enhance the services we provide, ensuring that residents like Howard have even more resources to help them thrive.

At Ability Housing, we believe in the power of community and the life-changing potential of safe, supportive housing.
